'year ender'

Happy New Year!

hm. now i have little bruises on my thumb from grating cheese for the pizza breads i made. masakit sya, sensitive kasi masyado ang right thumb ko. lalo sa acids. i remember removing nail polish on my toenails with acetone using my right forefinger and thumb. my thumb dried and shed its skin repeatedly for three months straight!

okay. enough about the thumb.

i just bought a copy of Dicta License's Paghilom!! yey! juskopo! the album deviates from the common theme of OPM artists of today, which is either love or hate, or both. it narrates the reality of the Pinoy society, the flaws (which are, I must admit, outrageous but obvious at the same time. pwede ba un? oo pwede. ata. oo!) and some people's nationalism (not just plain patriotism).

Pochoy Labog. he's amaaazing.

Battosai! (taena! anbata eh. hahaha)

may bago nga pala kong pinagpapantasyahan nowadays: Pochoy Labog [dicta license vocalist] and this is the ultimate turn-on: when he said (during the Rock 4 Peace Concert in UPD during the first quarter of this year): "Papayag ba kayong maging tuta ng mga Kano?". talk about a guy who loves his countrymen! halata rin naman un sa lyrics nila. [hanubayan!!! kinikilig akooooooo!!]

unconquered

INVICTUS

OUT of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

starting over

Two interesting events happened to me last monday (the day also happened to be the first day of 2nd sem).

One being an incident with the Upsilon Sigma Phi Fraternity.

The other being a rally inside the UP-M compound, inside the gates of the old College of Dentistry directly facing Court of Appeals. Faura street was blocked by the police, a lot of them stationed between the COA and the old CD, facing the students (and faculty & chancellor). There were politicians, too. I'll fill this blog in with details after I've done more research and analysis.

We met our 'interesting' 20-yr-old Chem 14 teacher yesterday, he seemed strict though. >.<

Once again, shopping did its therapeutic wonder. Thank you to my buddies Ange and Je for showing me around Gateway and the adjacent areas.

On to my hopelessly romantic/reflective side:

Every once in a while, people step up; they rise above themselves.
Sometimes they surprise you and sometimes, they fall short.
Life is funny sometimes.
It can push pretty hard but if you look close enough, you find help in the words of children, in the bars of a song and in the eyes of the one you love.
And if you're the luckest person in this entire planet, the person you love decides to love you back.

suhol (?)

nandun pa rin ang nangungunang rason ko. ano un? masdan mo ang mga kababayan natin at malalaman mo. fuck the money. it's all about the lives.

A man who has depths in his shame meets his destiny and his delicate decisions upon paths which few ever reach and with regard to the existence of which his nearest and most intimate friends may be ignorant; his mortal danger conceals itself from their eyes, and equally so his regained security. Such a hidden nature, which instinctively employs speech for silence and concealment, and is inexhaustible in evasion of communication, desires and insists that a mask of himself shall occupy his place in the hearts and heads of his friends; and supposing he does not desire it, his eyes will some day be opened to the fact that there is nevertheless amask of him there - and that it is well to be so.

the math17 test is at 5.30pm. i'll study at 1.

no title

I learned, 2 weeks ago, that Botany is 5x as hard as Zoology. Ever since the start of this sem I've been struggling with plants, fungi, algae and bacteria. And with that heavy book.

I can't wait for second year, second sem. Zoology.

I regret having chosen Anatomy as my elective subject last year. I should have studied Calculus instead. I thought I'd be studying a medical course. Well, I am. It's still part of Allied Medical Professions.

But Math 17 and Calculus are pre-requisites to a LOT of my course subjects. Biology subjects aren't as important.

Fuck. Just now I discovered something.

of an old mans big time rubbish

For the information of everyone, especially the worst justice secretary the Philippines has ever had, the "Ritual Dance of the Brave" or the "Oblation Run" is not a mere exhibition of the human flesh dictated by some culture nor is it an insignia of gasconade within the system.

The Chancellor of Alpha Phi Omega says, "When we run, we’re upholding academic freedom. This is not about UP having lost its values and morals. It’s about the students fighting for what they believe in. The Oblation Run has become almost like a tradition at UP. It’s an event in which we make a stand about issues involving not just the students, but the Filipino people."

I do not know where Gonzalez got the absurd idea that UP mainly produces 'destabilizers' and 'naked runners', nor do I know why he denied attacking the whole of UP because “there are many students there who are bright and good.” As to his main statement I have three objections, to wit;

First of all, only an outright idiot would ignore the fact that UP mainly produces topnotchers -as we all know, not in every field- (majority do not participate in activist movements).

Second is fact that one does not use the term 'mainly' when referring to a miniscule part of a population. Only UP Diliman holds the annual Oblation Run, and in the event only a FEW men run naked (e.g. Last 082806's Oblation Run had only 15!). Gonzalez, I assume, is perfectly aware that the UP System does not only consist of UP Diliman. Heck. I study in Manila, and I'd sprain my neck looking for naked men running within the campus. In vain.

Third. The fact that he denied assailing UP because 'many students there are bright and good' accords that he IS in fact, assaulting the university because of the above - mentioned reason. He acknowledges the truth that we do think. We do open our minds to the possibility of change, we think of solutions and we critically analyze present phenomenon, all for the common good of OUR COUTRY. We do not stop there. We ACT. To our own risk (another little known fact is the abduction and disappearance of 2 student activists in Diliman this year, who, up to this moment, have not been found). We have started a progression of the youth(rich or poor) fighting for the benefit of their countrymen. Now tell me, what's wrong with that?

Tell me about a significant contribution Gonzalez has accomplished for this country and I'll tell you about of flying guinea pigs and giant pandaka pygmaeas.

"He noted that UP had always been known as a 'cradle of leadership' but he was worried that with the way some students there were acting, some serious questions would be raised about the 'kind of leaders we will have in the future.'" (Inq7.net)

The way I see it, our future leaders will be far better than him and his kind, in every aspect.

He criticized the university, saying, “In every storm that takes place, UP students are in the forefront. As a matter of fact, our history will show that since the martial law years, students from UP were the ones who went underground and fought the government." -SO?

I have friends and relatives hailing from UST, they do not claim to be well-behaved, they simply are. One doesn't need to proclaim to the whole country that he is 'well - behaved', thanks to the university he came from. One only needs to practice the right behaviour, and everyone will appreciate her/him, no questions asked. They say for every rule there is/are (an) exception/s, in this case I claim to have spotted the old big-bellied desperately-clinging stain. He's an elderly man who criticizes systems that actually work for the country's progress while he hasn't REALLY done anything for it. It's a mystery how he got to the appointment to such high office.

Shame on him.

If you don't have an idea of what I'm typing about, click.

greenpeace

We walked to Pier 13, Manila Bay last thursday from the College of Arts and Sciences (Just imagine how my feet ached. That port is opposite Intramuros.), and went aboard the ship MV Esperanza. It's currently in the Philippines to restore some of our rivers and seas and to solicit support (it's in Guimaras right now, I think the ship will be leaving the country this September/October).

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I was there.

It's one of the Greenpeace ships. Greenpeace. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? It's an international organization taking steps to defend our oceans (including the wildlife in it). You might have watched its ad/saw its logo while watching MTV, they're endorsing the organization.

(sigh)Being in that ship brought back memories of first and only time I saw dolphins. No, not in Subic or in any dolphin show. I saw them in the wild, freely jumping and gliding a few inches beneath the water parallel to the direction of the ship I rode back from our Puerto Galera vacation. They were one of the most beautiful creatures I've ever seen. You, too, will think that way when/after you've seen them the way I did.

Yesterday we (I, Karen, Rikki, Tomas, Marod) did our respective interviews with veterans in the Veterans compound near Park 'n Ride. We asked about their experiences during the World War II. Ask Karen about her interviewee. Goodness.

My interviewee is Ms. Luz, a pretty 83-year old lady currently living in Makati. She said the Japs brought about so much fear and terror, forcing her and her family to move from one place to another every so often. She temporarily stopped schooling at age 18 because of the Jap invasion in the Philippines. She also got married that year with an Engineer. Unfortunately he died because of a sickness he acquired during the war while fighting with the army. In the 1950s she remarried, this time with a Doctor. (trivia: her husbands were UP graduates)

We had a brief encounter with Jenay and Kathrine, before going to Veterans, in the ped xing.

warning sign

by Coldplay

A warning sign
I missed the good part then I realized
I started looking and the bubble burst
I started looking for excuses

Come on in
I've gotta tell you what a state I'm in
I've gotta tell you in my loudest tones
I started looking for a warning sign

When the truth is, I miss you
Yeah the truth is, that I miss you, so

A warning sign
You came back to haunt me and I realized
That you were an island and I passed you by
And you were an island to discover

Come on in
I've gotta tell you what a state I'm in
I've gotta tell you in my loudest tones
That I started looking for a warning sign

When the truth is, I miss you
Yeah the truth is, that I miss you so
And I'm tired I should not have let you go

So I crawl back into your open arms
Yes I crawl back into your open arms
And I crawl back into your open arms
Yes I crawl back into your open arms

fresh to play

last friday night i watched the concert FRESH TO PLAY in the Bahay ng Alumni, Diliman Campus. Kasi gan'to un: may fresh nyt sa Manila Campus, College of Pharmacy noon, kaya lang alam kong meron pang susunod na frosh nyt, sa 19 at 26 kaya at alam ko rin na mag-eenjoy ako sa Diliman, so after 1 hour in the CP frosh nyt, i hurriedly went to the unit to pack my books, then to Diliman to watch the concert.

Kamusta naman. UP freshies nyt nga eh. bakit pag galing sa ibang campus may bayad?! Little did I know how lucky I was going to be... hahaha!!!

Juan Paulo Camaclang & Patricia Janine Icatlo. thanks for accompanying (and protecting??!!) me.

Good thing I didn't miss the performance of professional bands. Some of the other artists that performed are Callalily, Chicosci, Barbie Almalbis, Pupil, Sponge Cola, Stonefree, Sugarfree, Juana, Protein Shake, Imago, Up Dharma Down, Kamikaze, Sandwich, Dictalicense, Kjwan, Moonstar 88, Pedicab, Mayonnaise, kasama na rin sila Tuesday Vargas at Ate Glow(both alumni of UP). may nakalimutan pa kong at least 3 bands eh, nabura ko kasi listahan ko. grrrr.

O diba. Just image how lucky I was.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

pati napadpad rin kami ng ate ko sa MTV afterparty, kaya lang Pupil na lang ang naabutan namin na tumutugtog. hehehe... 3 am na nakauwi, good thing daddy lent us his car. Sponsors of the Fresh 2 Rock event are: MTV, Campus Radio 97.1, Teazz, C2, Gonuts Donuts, Palmolive, Pulp, Levi's, etc..

hanggan dito na lang muna ang kwento, time to study, i think i'm failing math 17. which is a pre-req of 11 units next sem. badtrip. (meron pa pala: i'm savoring the newly discovered joys of shoulder-length hair! =D)

6.17.2006

UP-M

write-ups, reaction papers, reading assignments, august 15 (1916, 1946, 1976) frontpage assignments, loooooong walks(taft-college of arts and sciences/robinsons, gil-faura, gil-un, faura-un, faura-kalaw, gil-kalaw, orosa-taft, walks inside UP-PGH compound) under the blistering heat of the sun(good thing we're allowed to wear slippers!). i'm exhausted.

wed night - we(my cousins, jancel & zach) met up with urie (with miguel, who went somewhere else to eat) in starbucks lorre lorenzo. the funny thing there is they tried to comfort me when i was almost entirely unaffected by what happened (to me and another person. glad that's over!) about 30 minutes to 1 hour before we went down to meet up with urie. hahaha... :)

friday - hotdogs, sizzling plate, tocino, siopao.

I hope our Math 17 professor will finally show up on Monday. Speaking of professors, I now know that name of our History I prof, Bernard Kargadilla. FYI: He wouldn't tell us his name when we were in his class.

I was encouraged/impressed by mr.vice pres-usc's 'speech' in the CP audi.. wow. I'm still thinking if i should quote and post what he said in this blog because it might sound too proud if chanced upon by superior-feeling people.

I was super impressed by the UP-M Indayog(tama nga ba? it's the varsity dance group of the university) and by the glee club(what's its name again?!).. Astigin.

I shall always remember the three virtues represented by the lion, tin man, scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz. These virtues were explained to us by the priest(sorry i can't remember his name) who celebrated the opening ceremony mass last June 13, 2006. Let me share with you one dialogue he talked about:

PARENT: Nag-aalala akong papasukin ang anak ko sa UP, baka maging radikal ang pag-iisip.

SAGOT: Dapat nga matuwa ka kung ganun dahil hindi lang sarili niya ang iniisip ng anak mo, pati ang mga kababayan at bansa niya.

For me, the answer is correct. It's only fair to cooperate in/do something that will benefit our fellow countrymen who pay taxes used in sending us to school.

I want your opinion.

independence day

As we are all aware, today is the Philippines' Independence Day. hmmm... Appropriate?! Did our ancestors REALLY become independent on june 12, 1898??? Obviously, no. Even today Filipinos experience lack of freedom and of equality almost everywhere. Let's face it. Power and money could turn the innocent to guilty and vice versa. I wish that that IS a lie, *sigh* you know as well as I do it isn't. I hate it.

wow.

----------

Shift to another 'Independence Day'. It's a song by Barbie's Cradle. :)

If you disagree, I'd choose you over me
This way I'd keep the peace
Keep me inside, don’t turn off the light
'Cause without you how can I breathe

Independence day is not for me
When I'm bound to you, I feel so free

Pretend that I'm a deer, travelling any year
I need you desperately
Night and day I roam you need to take me home
'Cause on my own I can't see, yeah

Here are all my keys, enter as you please
North, south, west, center, east
Teach me not to hide in the deadly walls of pride
Speak to me gently

Nice. :)

Tomorrow. First day in the University. Scary. =<. Huhu..

a million stories and all the promises left unsigned

yumm.. sarap talaga ng french fries. (pinaghirapan ko yan ah, wlang kokontra!! =p)

i've just finished sending my second group message. it's a bit long, my cp asked for confirmation if the message would be sent in 5 parts. sending the message to almost all globe users in my contacts itself took a lot of time. that's what occupied my phone while i was cooking french fries.

anyway, let me tell you stuff about my new blog/url. i moved from www.nnini.tk / blogdrive 'cause i prefer the way blogger displays archive links.

'a million stories' was taken from mojofly's album, 'a million stories and all the promises left unsigned' (w/ mojofly's then vocalist kitchie nadal, it's one of my all-time favourite albums). **shit. wla akong makita na lyrics online. ausin ko na lang to next time pg meron na**
